Day 50 – John 15: 26-27; 16: 4b-15

On reading this passage of scripture we may well quake in our boots, for the first thing that disciples are instructed to do, is to testify about Jesus! In other words our mission as disciples is to witness about Jesus Christ – that can be exciting but also very scary!

Thankfully we have Pentecost. In John 16:13, Jesus states that when the Spirit comes, He will guide us into truth. We are not expected to work alone. The Message (Msg) says, “He will take you by the hand and guide you…” In other words, the Holy Spirit will reveal for us layer by layer, the truth about our Saviour Jesus Christ, in bite sized chunks, as and when we are ready, so that we are able to testify to others and not feel overwhelmed by all there might be to say and do on behalf of the risen Christ.

We are truly empowered by the Holy Spirit and do not need to rely on our own strength, or be so aware of our weaknesses that we are actually frozen into doing nothing. The Spirit will lead us by the hand.

But Jesus doesn’t just leave the promise at that point. There is more to come! In John 16:14, he says that the Spirit “will take from me and deliver it to you” (Msg). The power of Jesus will be delivered to us through the Holy Spirit. That’s not any old power, that’s power to love, to be compassionate, to be abundantly generous, to bless others, to share testimony, to perform miracles in His name…and more and more and more.

This is the empowerment that we have as disciples, and this is the power that we can rely on to share the Good News with others. Let’s glorify God and bring it on!

Thank you for Pentecost and the great gift of the Holy Spirit empowering us to share the Good News with others. May we truly glorify Your Name.  Amen and Amen.
